What are brain tumors?
A brain tumor is any growth of abnormal cells in the brain. Malignant brain tumors are cancerous and are usually fast growing and invasive, meaning they spread easily to other tissue. They rarely spread to other parts of the body, but may recur after treatment. Sometimes, noncancerous brain tumors are called malignant because of the potential damage they can do to vital functions of the brain.
Benign tumors don’t contain cancer cells and usually don’t recur when they’re removed. Most benign brain tumors are noninvasive, but they can be just as damaging as cancerous tumors depending on their size and location in the brain.
All brain tumors have the potential to cause increased pressure in the skull and damage or destroy normal brain tissue, causing loss of function and other problems like chronic headaches, seizures and many other nervous system issues.
Northwell has unparalleled expertise in treating brain tumors of all types.
