What is bile duct cancer?

The bile ducts help carry bile, a fluid made by the liver that aids digestion.  When cancers develop in the bile ducts, they can cause painful obstructions. Most of these cancers are adenocarcinomas, which means they develop in the glandular cells of the bile duct. They tend to grow in the part of the ducts outside the liver and are sometimes referred to as extrahepatic tumors. Next to gallstones, cancer is the most common cause of bile duct obstruction.
